School Exclusions

School exclusions can have a significant impact on neurodivergent children, particularly those with autism, ADHD, or other learning differences.

Exclusions—whether temporary (suspensions) or permanent—often arise from unmet needs, lack of appropriate support, or difficulties in adapting to the school environment.

Many neurodivergent students struggle with rigid expectations, sensory challenges, and communication barriers, which can lead to misunderstandings and behavioural responses that result in exclusion. Understanding the causes and advocating for inclusive education is essential in reducing exclusions and ensuring all children receive the support they need to thrive.
