Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs)

Special Education Needs and or disabilities  (SEND) support: A guide for parents.

If your child is facing challenges in their education setting, a discussion with the Special Education Needs Co-ordinator officer (SENCO) should be explored to ensure that support is being accessed through the graduated approach, to meet your child’s needs within their school or educational setting. For more details on Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) support, visit:

If it is identified that your child needs extra support beyond the graduated approach, you may wish to consider requesting and EHC assessment.

An Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP) assessment is available for children and young people, aged 0 to 25 years, to identify if additional support, beyond what is normally available through special educational needs (SEN) support in education settings, is required.

An Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP) is a legally binding document that secures additional support for educational, health, and social care needs, to enable a child or young person, with SEND, achieve their personal outcomes.

An EHCP is for children and young people who:

  • May have/have significant special educational needs that require extra support beyond what a school or college can provide through the Graduated Approach
  • Need a formal assessment to determine needs and specific provisions required to support them.
  • Are aged 0 to 25, as long as they are still accessing some form of education or training.
